Mood Board Analysis




I want my magazine to be about novel developments in physics and the computer sciences. I think I want a simple color scheme: black, white, red, and blue. For fonts, I want to use something minimalist and modern. Because I am a fan of tech magazines like Wired and Vice Motherboard, I think it would be useful to borrow some of their strategies for clean page design. I happen to know from my time learning web development that Google Fonts has hundreds of fonts exactly like the the kind I have in mind for this goal.  Finally, I would like for my magazine's texture to be something flat and metallic, but in such a way that it pairs well with my desire for a minimalist implementation of fonts and colors.

The images I chose for my mood board represent the sort of theme I'm going for in the magazine. I very much enjoy electronics and robotics, so I thought to focus on those images in the magazines I cut out (this choice was also because I could not find many images relating to the other topics I wanted to cover in my magazine, so I had to make do). I also came up with the idea to set aside a section in my magazine for a profile on a woman in STEM. I came up with this when I saw the teenage girl holding a robot remote.

My Magazine Photo Session, Some Discussion of Technique and Setup

An establishing shot like this could have worked given slight adjustments. I was going for a Joseph Wright of Derby Philosopher Lecturing on the Orrey  setup, with everyone looking in on the purple plant lights, but unfortunately most of my class was unwilling to pose in unison. Shots like these are a product of my being very quick and moving from place to place in order to catch short movements, gestures, and happenings. My goal with this photo session was observational photography anyways, so random, natural moments like these were what I had in mind. The lighting is a little strange here. I wasn't sure of what I was going for, but I do like the ethereal glow of the box in the background, which you will see is something I focused on in later photos. Magazine Table of Contents

The whole magazine is under 90 pages long. The table of contents is 2 pages long, where the second page usually contains the page numbers, etc. The fonts used are similar to those used on the cover (sans-serif). Not much wordage is dedicated to each article, mostly names and subjects.

Magazine Genre Codes and Conventions: Presentation

For this research assignment, I was asked to analyze the covers, tables of contents, and selected spreads of 3 issues of Popular Science magazine. In doing this, I learned a lot about the house style of Popular Science: more specifically, why it is as such and how it is used to create a certain futuristic and modern feeling. The magazine's mission statement is to - with "clarity", "insight", and "relevance" - present "the future now" to an audience of science enthusiasts. Therefore, it is key that puff, and fluff is minimized, unnecessary anchorage and clutter is reduced, and readability and conciseness is emphasized. Although I found this in the way the tables of contents and spreads were laid out, this was made most evident in the covers of each of my issues.
